Important Updates
We are proud to offer a range of post-secondary education pathways to our international learning community. While some elements of the student application and work permit process have been temporarily amended to reflect new Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements, most of NWP's international processes remain unchanged.
Updates
Off-Campus Working Hours
The IRCC's mandated adjustments to off-campus working hours for international students are now in effect. If students meet all other requirements to work off-campus while studying, they are permitted to work 24 hours per week. Find out more about the changes to off-campus work hours.
Changing Designated Learning Institutions (DLI)
On November 15, 2024, IRCC announced changes to the rules and regulations pertaining to student transfers between Designated Learning Institutions. As of November 8, 2024, if students wish to change their DLI, they must apply for a new study permit. Students will not be permitted to begin studies at the new DLI without a decision on their study permit application unless they meet the criteria outlined on the IRCC published list. Find out more about the IRCCs new process for changing your school or program.
Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
PGWP Eligibility
As of November 1, 2024, IRCC has implemented adjustments to PGWP eligibility for both current study permit holders and new study permit applicants.
Students who applied for their study permit before November 1, 2024, are now required to include proof of language ability in their PGWP application. Find out more about the IRCC adjustments, permitted tests and proof of demonstrated skills.
Students who applied for their study permit on or after November 1, 2024, are required to include proof of language ability, and must also meet new requirements based on their chosen type of institution and level of program. These guidelines determine PGWP eligibility and whether a student must graduate from an eligible field of study. Find out more about the differences between institutions and see a full list of eligible programs.
Applying for your PGWP at the Canadian Border
As of June 21, 2024, international students can no longer apply for a PGWP at the Canadian border. This measure has been implemented to address "flagpoling" – or disingenuous travel across the border and will help reduce delays for travellers and the movement of goods. Read the IRCC announcement about "flagpoling."
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
As of January 22, 2024, most students must include a PAL from the province or territory where they plan to study with their study permit application.
Upon student acceptance of the offer of admission and deposit payment, NWP will request the required PAL from the Province of Alberta. Once the PAL is available, NWP will issue the document using the email address noted in the student's admission application.
Find out if your application is exempt from this process by reviewing the IRCC list of exceptions.
Open Work Permit for Spouses
On January 22, 2024, IRCC communicated the following regarding spousal work permits:
The spouses and common-law partners of some international students may be eligible for an open work permit.
Find out more about this change or how to apply for a work permit for your spouse.
Programs Available to International Students
If you submitted your study permit application using a Letter of Acceptance from Northwestern Polytechnic on or after November 1, 2024, you must graduate from a program in an eligible field of study with an approved Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code to be able to apply for a PGWP.
Northwestern Polytechnic's certificate, diploma, and degree program CIPs are listed in the table below. To confirm if the program is PGWP eligible, find the CIP code and enter it into the IRCC search tool. If the CIP code appears on the PGWP-eligible field of study list, the program is PGWP-eligible.
This list may be updated with additional programs, so please check back often.
We recommend that students take a screenshot of the program CIP code if it appears on the IRCC PGWP list. Ensure the screenshot shows a date and time stamp taken immediately before submitting your study permit application and retain that image for your PGWP application.
