A Hive of Activity

Northwestern Polytechnic’s National Bee Diagnostic Centre (NBDC) is Canada’s only dedicated facility for comprehensive bee and pollinator diagnostics. Established in 2012, we have built an international reputation for providing essential diagnostic services, applied research, and specialized training that support pollinator health and agricultural sustainability.

Located in Beaverlodge, Alberta, our 40,000 sq. ft. facility—right in the heart of Alberta’s beekeeping region - serves producers, researchers, conservationists, and regulators across Canada. Our team of researchers uses advanced molecular tools, microscopy, and microbiology to detect pests, pathogens, and parasites in honeybee and native bee populations. We also offer honey composition analysis and habitat-based services.

As one of only 67 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) Technology Access Centres (TACs), NBDC is a trusted partner in research, innovation, and knowledge transfer. From diagnostics and training to fieldwork and collaborative projects, we’re proud to support pollinator health and agricultural resilience - locally, nationally and across the planet.
