What is a Micro-credential?

A micro-credential is a short-term learning opportunity that helps learners upskill or re-skill to pivot in their careers or to re-enter the workforce. They are:

• Relevant - Based on competencies that are required in the labour market, where they will be maintained through innovation and close collaboration with industry partners
• Verifiable - Prove that learners have achieved learning outcomes through assessments and grades that are stored/distributed through meta data linked badges or being compatible with traditional transcripts where possible.
• Flexible – Achieved in shorter timeframes than compared to formal education. Micro-credentials can stand alone or can be stacked to achieve a higher certification/credential (Ecampus Ontario, 2020, p. 2).
