Northwestern Polytechnic Mental Health Services welcomes Samra Zafar.

After escaping a decade of abuse living in Canada as a child bride, Samra has become a beacon of hope for those facing exclusion and abuse. Samra is a physician-in-training, four-time TEDx speaker and the bestselling author of A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose, named one of CBC’s Best Books of 2019 and a top 2019 read by The Washington Post. She is currently writing her second book, Unconditional, which explores science-based strategies to unlearn limiting beliefs and live a fuller, unconditional life.

Samra's keynote ‘Resilience Redefined’ addresses sabotaging beliefs surrounding self-care, and equips audience members with actionable strategies to help strengthen relationships, find long-term success, and build resilience in the face of challenge.

Mark Henick is the author of So-Called Normal: a Memoir of Family, Depression, and Resilience (2021). Mark draws on his experience as a patient, professional, policy influencer, and public figure in the mental health system to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues among young adults and provide strategies for building and supporting a mentally healthy campus.

In her presentation, Dr. Kang simplifies sophisticated neuroscience to enable audience members to harness the power of technology to optimize our health, connection, and innovation while steering clear of the serious dangers of persuasive design, addiction, and toxic tech.

An ACWS Leading Change facilitator and member of the Calgary Stampeders will present 'Understanding Domestic Violence.' Presentation description: "Participants will explore the root causes of domestic violence to gain an understanding of how and why violence happens. We will examine and challenge common myths and misconceptions that exist about domestic violence. Using the evidence-based Duluth Model of Power and Control, [participants will] learn about the various tactics abusers use to establish a dynamic of coercive control. The session will provide an overview of how to recognize abusive dynamics in both in-person and online interactions."
