Mykel's Acceptance Speech
I would like to thank everyone who has enabled me to get to where I am now. I am super grateful to accept this award from such a great college. It was an amazing four years and I would highly recommend anyone to attend GPRC.
Gerald Macdonald is being honoured for his years of volunteer work, teaching and mentoring NWP nursing students. Macdonald moved to Grande Prairie from Halifax with a nursing diploma, and after coming to know the institution's nursing faculty, he began acting as a preceptor, mentoring students during their education placements.
In 2010 he earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree through NWP and the University of Alberta, going on to complete a Masters of Nursing degree. Macdonald works as part of a team in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program where NWP students job-shadow him.
Macdonald also volunteers at the provincial and national levels. From 2010-2014, he was a council member representative for the Northwest on CARNA (College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta) and president from 2016-2018. While president, he held the national position as the Alberta representative on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Nurses Association.

She served as the Chairperson for the NWP Fine Arts Advisory Committee and dedicated her time to the Art of the Peace Board, served as Chair for the Prairie Art Gallery Board of Directors (now the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie) and was an integral volunteer for the Montrose Cultural Centre. Taylor also served on the McNaught Homestead Restoration Society Board, City Arts Committee and the Grande Prairie City Municipal Planning Committee. She is a leader by example and has served as an inspiration to many.

Tina served on the NWP Alumni Foundation Board for six years starting in 2010 and her efforts have made a lasting impact on the institution's stewardship and recognition programs.

Gail is known as an absolutely tireless volunteer whose efforts have made a huge difference at NWP and throughout the community.
She has dedicated 30 years of working to recruit and teach NWP students about the significance of volunteering at events in our community ranging from NWP fundraising events such as the beloved President's Ball and community events such as the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Games, World Women Curling Championships, and many, many more.
For the first time in the 12-year history of the Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Award, NWP recognized a current student. Nursing student Laura Rotaru, has been a key member in the current group of Education Ambassadors who have shown initiative to support existing NWP activities, create new events, and be a support and resource for their fellow students while building their own leadership abilities.
NWP Education Ambassadors attract students who want to make a difference and be involved with building a student-centred community that supports every student in achieving their goals. This student mentorship group, follows a mission of student-led, college-facilitated and connects directly to the intitution's goal to promote and enhance effective and comprehensive student support programs.
Former radio sports director "Big Paul" Thomas - also known as Tom Pura - attended and reported on Wolves games and activities for years. Tom provided extensive coverage of the Wolves programs and players, and according to Athletic Director François Fournier it was during his time at Big County Radio that NWP Wolves Athletics received more media coverage than any other program in Alberta, and very possibly in Canada. Through his many years as a radio sports reporter and as one of the game announcers Tom became the Voice of the Wolves. More recently, Tom volunteers his expertise as the Emcee for the annual Wolves Festival of Gold event, where we honor the athletic and academic achievements of our Wolves teams and players. Tom performs this role in such an outstanding manner that he has been given the Festival of Gold Emcee role for as long as he wants it.
Carolyn Vasileiou is the NWP instructor known for having modelled and taught a “habit” of volunteerism to each cohort of her students. Carolyn and her students have provided enthusiastic support to many NWP and community fundraising events, ensuring their success and profitability. Students are able to benefit from these experiences because Carolyn is generous with her personal time, spending evenings and weekends when necessary to ensure the participation meets the needs of the event, and that students are adding to their own body of knowledge through those efforts. She has embarked on numerous overnight trips with groups of students to enhance their understanding of hospitality and tourism practices – travelling on her own time to destinations such as New York, Edmonton, Vancouver or Jasper. Carolyn has been a volunteer member of the NWP Alumni Foundation Board of Directors and the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Board, taking a pause from those commitments in recent years to complete a Masters of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University in Victoria BC.
