In 1978 Willie deWit was a 17-year-old Composite High School football quarterback working on a research project on boxing for a physical education class. Boxing quickly became his passion, and deWit went on to a career of 67 wins and 12 losses that included the North American Amateur Heavyweight championship, the World Amateur Heavyweight title and a silver medal for Canada in the 1984 Olympics. In his professional career he was ranked number 5 in the world.
Upon his retirement from boxing in 1987, he enrolled at Grande Prairie Regional College in pre-law. He has said that this was the accomplishment he was most proud of. In countless interviews he has given credit to GPRC as “the perfect place for me to learn how to learn again…” He attended GPRC from 1989-1991 then went on to graduate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta and has been practicing law in Calgary ever since.
