New degree provides exciting options for local and international students.
Beginning Fall 2023, Northwestern Polytechnic will offer a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program designed to prepare tomorrow’s business leaders with the entrepreneurial skills and business acumen required to thrive.
Recently approved by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education, this four-year degree program means students can now earn their entire BBA degree under NWP’s banner in northern Alberta. Students will learn fundamental business concepts, including accounting, human resource management, communications, marketing, information technology, law, and economics.
“NWP’s expanded degree capacity is great news for aspiring business professionals,” says School of Business Dean, Dr. Carly McLeod. “Completing a BBA degree within our School of Business allows students to benefit from a full complement of business courses as well as work Integrated learning opportunities that are specifically aligned to student, regional and global community needs.”
NWP’s new BBA degree program can be customized to suit a variety of learners. Skilled tradespeople can apply trades qualifications towards the credit requirements of a BBA, and students can ladder into the program from NWP's Business Administration certificate or diploma programs. In addition to completing core business courses, students can tailor their BBA based on their interests and career goals by selecting business electives from a variety of different subject areas, including accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, and management. NWP's BBA meets the prerequisite requirements to continue on towards their Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designations.
“Receiving approval to offer the BBA program is an important milestone for NWP. It is the result of collective efforts to optimize in-demand programming that supports learning community,” says Dr. Vanessa Sheane, NWP Provost and Vice President Academic. “We are grateful for the ongoing support from our business community and local partners which was instrumental in obtaining the BBA approval.”
In the lead up to the announcement, NWP also received grant funding from the CPA Education Foundation to support Accounting course curriculum development and classroom technology enhancements to increase program accessibility. The CPA Education Foundation Grant was established to provide financial support to enhance the quality of post-secondary accounting education, and to raise the profile of the accounting profession among faculty and students in Alberta. With the support of CPA Education Foundation, NWP's BBA Accounting emphasis, meets the requirements for student entry into the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP).
“Our BBA program will prepare Canadian and international graduates for success by exploring the ethical, financial and managerial issues that businesses and managers face daily,” says NWP President and CEO, Justin Kohlman. “We are delighted to add yet another full degree pathway into NWP’s evolving program portfolio and can’t wait to welcome the next generation of business leaders to our uniquely entrepreneurial learning environment.”
