Men’s Basketball Sweep Undefeated Thunder
The Wolves (4-4) traveled south to Edmonton to face the undefeated and Nationally ranked #7 Concordia Thunder (10-0) on Friday, November 23.
Friday night saw the Wolves come out firing, scoring 23 in the first quarter, but still trailed Concordia 23-24 after one quarter. The second quarter was better for the Wolves, with the team winning the quarter 25-20. The Wolves led the Thunder 48-44 at half and the Wolves energy was high. The third quarter saw the Thunder win 24-18, hoping to keep their undefeated record intact.
The Wolves responded in the fourth, keeping the Thunder to only 12 points scored which resulted in the Wolves winning the fourth 23-12, and the game 89-80.
The Wolves played lights out defense down the stretch, keeping one of the strongest offensive team in the north to 36 points in the second half. With the victory, the Wolves moved to 5-4 in the season and the Thunder fell to 10-1. Player of the Game honors went to Wolves 4th year guard Payton Tirrell with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Other leading scorers were Liam O’Hallahan with 18 points and Logan Rempel with 14 points and 4 rebounds.
Both teams came out swinging, with the Thunder leading the Wolves 27-19 after the first quarter. The Wolves clawed back in the second, outscoring the Thunder 21-18 to trail 45-40 at half. The Wolves worked together and kept clawing in the third, outscoring the Thunder 18-13 to be all squared at 58 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was won by strong defensive play by the Wolves. The team held the Thunder to 16 and scored 22 of their own, to win the quarter and the game, 80-74. Another sweet victory for the Wolfpack!
The Wolves defense was strong again Saturday afternoon, keeping the Thunder to 29 points in the second half. Player of the Game honors went to Wolves 2nd year Logan Rempel with 18 points. Other leading scorers were Payton Tirrell with 12 points and Liam O’Hallahan with 11 points.
With the weekend sweep, the Wolves are 6-4 in the season. The Wolves now head on the road to conclude the fall semester with a match up against the Lakeland Rustlers. The games are Friday, November 30 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, December 1 at 3 p.m. Both games can be watched online at www.acactv.ca
Women’s Basketball
The Women’s Basketball team were on the road in Edmonton this past weekend to take on the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
Friday night’s game started off a bit shaky for the Wolves (0-8) with the Thunder (6-4) out-shooting them 18-6 in the first quarter. By the second, the Wolves turned up the heat putting pressure on the Thunder defence outscoring them 19-16 to end the half with a score of 34-25.
Trailing by only 9, the Wolves went into the second half feisty, but despite a 2 point difference in the fourth, the Wolves were unable to match Concordia’s 55 per cent shot from the field and a thunderous 27 points in the third falling to the Thunder 56-79.
The Big Kahuna Player of the Game for the Wolves was #11 Britney Peters who lead the Wolves in baskets with 19 points.
The second game of the weekend series saw the Thunder race out in the first with 19 points, allowing the Wolves only 5 coming from rookies Lilee Burke-Stasiuk and Kelly Reid.
Through the second and third, the Thunder increased the points gap by 32 with the Wolves unable to respond. Despite a better free throw percentage, the Wolves struggled from the field and beyond the arc throughout the game against a more experienced Concordia squad, dropping the match 45-71.
An impressive performance from rookie guard, #10, Lilee Burke-Stasiuk who put up 21 points and 5-11 from the 3-point line, earned her the Big Kahuna Player of the Game.
The women are on the road this weekend to conclude the fall semester with a match up against the Lakeland Rustlers. The games are Friday, November 30 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, December 1 at 1 p.m. Both games can be watched online at www.acactv.ca.
