News Archives: Your GPRC Wolves experienced a huge 2016-17 season

Achieving 11 ACAC All-Conference awards, 2 CCAA All-Canadians, 2 ACAC Coach of the Year awards, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze ACAC Championship medals, and 38 student-athletes achieving Academic Honors.
Cross Country Running/Indoor Track started things off by hosting the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships, where Brandon Wladyko was named to the Conference with the men’s team placing 5th overall. The women’s team placed 6th overall at the Indoor Track Championships, with the 4x400m relay team of Janai Martens, Kelsey Bishop, Brittany Duvall, and Maria Houle bringing home bronze. Brandon was also selected as GPRC’s Valedictorian with fellow runner, Jonathan Parenteau as Salutatorian at this year’s convocation. The team won the GPRC Team Academic Award with an average GPA of 3.68.
The Wolves Soccer teams welcomed a new coach, ACAC Coach of the Year, Chris Morgan. The Women’s team won the ACAC silver medal, and were the first Wolves soccer team to attend a CCAA National Championships. The women won the CCAA Fair Play Award while finishing a very respectful 6th place, with three players, Kennedy Hall, Brook Robert and Chelsea Fitzgerald named to ACAC All-Conference team. The Men who finished 4th in their division, contested every game and continued to improve throughout the season.
A strong performance this season by your Men’s Basketball team, placing 6th overall. Wolves Point Guard, Kenny Johnson scored more than 1000 points in two seasons and was an ACAC All-Conference selection, who was also honoured as an ACAC Athlete of the Week. The team, although very young, demonstrated a very competitive attitude.
A new coach took on the Women’s Basketball team this season. With nine rookies on the squad, the team worked hard to find their groove. The players showed resilience, in a very tough conference, as they worked hard and continually improved over the season.
Wolves Men’s Volleyball placed 4th in their division earning a trip back to the playoffs. They had a very impressive performance finishing the Championships in 5th place. The men placed two players on the ACAC All-Conference team, Lucas Robertson and Tristan Simmonds. Simmonds also received a CCAA All-Canadian nomination, ACAC Athlete of the Week, and took home the 2017 GPRC Wolves Male Athlete of the Year.
The Wolves Women’s Volleyball team had another great year. They introduced a new coach, ACAC Coach of the Year, Sam Tu’ivai who brought in new ideas and innovation to the program. The team won the ACAC Silver Medal with four ACAC All-Conference players, Megan Koch, Jamie Strauss, Michelle Gauthier, and Emily Groenenboom. Groenenboom was also nominated as a CCAA All-Canadian, and the 2017 GPRC Wolves Female Athlete of the Year. The women played exceptionally well at CCAA Nationals finishing in 4th place while placing two players, Michelle Gauthier and Megan Koch on the CCAA Nationals Tournament All-Star team.
Some notable community awards include Wolves Cross Country Running/Indoor Track Coach, Rick Scott who won the Northwest Sport Excellence Unsung Hero Award. Men’s Volleyball player, Tristan Simmonds, who won the Northwest Sport Excellence Male Athlete of the Year Award, and the Wolves Women’s Soccer team winning the Northwest Sport Excellence Female Team of the Year Award.
With many athletes returning to contest another season with the Wolves, the 2017-18 season is going to be a very exciting one to watch!
