Jamie Wigmore, 23, left her print on the track as a four-time All-Conference and three-time All-Canadian champion for GPRC Wolves Cross Country team during her four seasons.
Now, Jamie gets to leave her print on the team in a different way. As a successful applicant for the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program, Wigmore will begin apprenticing Cross Country Coach Bill Corcoran and Rick Scott this fall cross country season.
“Our team is like a family, and I’m just really grateful I get to be a part of it again,” says Wigmore. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to be able to see the sport from a different perspective and be able to learn from Bill and Rick. They both do so much for the team.”
“We’re really excited to have Jamie join us in the coaching ranks. We are thankful to CCAA for providing us with this opportunity,” says Bill Corcoran, GPRC Business and Office Administration Chair and Instructor and Wolves Athletics Cross Country Coach. “It’s awesome to allow recent graduate athletes to get into coaching plus it’s a great opportunity to get more women into GPRC’s coaching system.”
The community got to watch Jamie grow and shine on the track over her last three seasons with the team. Last season she finished strong bringing home the 2015 ACAC Cross Country Running Championship in Lethbridge. With her victory, Jamie became the only third GPRC female runner to win an ACAC individual championship.
“Finishing my last year of running in the ACAC on that note was very special to me,” says Wigmore. “I came in second the previous two years, so coming in first had definitely been a big goal of mine.”
Jamie graduated from GPRC in December 2015 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting degree through GPRC’s collaborative program with Athabasca University.
“We are always looking for ways to build the program, and focusing on local athletes to help them succeed,” says Corcoran. “Jamie really embodied that. It’s exciting to have a local athlete who has gone through the program, be able to come back, coach and help the new members of the team.”
“I’m really looking forward to being able to assist with coaching the newer members on the team,” says Wigmore. “I remember being in their position and it’s going to be cool to get to continue to grow this family that our team has created.”
The Wolves cross country season will kick off at the end of August, with their first race happening in mid-September.
