GPRC Wolves Women’s Basketball travelled to Edmonton this weekend where they fell to the Kings University Eagles.
Friday evening, the Wolves got off to a slow start, struggling to keep the Eagles off the glass early, leading to too many opportunities and went into the half down 33-19. The second half started with more of the same before the Wolves got a lift with some tough defensive play, creating some turnovers and converting them into points on the other end. The girls closed the margin to 10 before the final buzzer, but couldn’t close the gap resulting in a final of score of 57-47 in favour of the Eagles. With 10 points and 3 rebounds, a notable performance from Jordan Andres earned the rookie forward Wolves Player of the Game. Wolves Coach Jared Cheverie said that “the women once again showed stretches of the type of inspired play that they are capable of. The next step for us is to improve how we start games and to play consistently throughout”.The Wolves got off to a strong start on Saturday taking an 18-15 lead after the first quarter but struggled on the glass with a low shooting percentage, allowing the Eagles to take the lead into the half, 43-27. The Wolves continued to work hard in the second half but were not able to make up for the damage done in the second quarter, recording a final score of 69-53. Again, Wolves player of the game honor went to Jordan Andres with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Coach Cherverie commented that “the team continues to work hard and improve, but some inconsistencies in some controllable key areas were the difference for us again today”.
The Wolves face the NAIT Ooks, on home turf Friday February 20th at 6:00pm and Saturday February 21st at 1:00pm. All games can be watched live on acactv.ca
