GPRC Wolves Women’s Basketball hosted the NAIT Ooks in their second weekend of play, first at home, of the winter semester. The women worked hard and had a strong week of preparation leading into the weekend in an effort to keep the nationally ranked Ooks off the glass, but dropped both games, 69-45 and 76-53.
Friday night, the women had a strong first half defensively, and on the glass the Wolves held NAIT to only 35 first half points and a 6-point lead at the break. That effort continued for the Wolves in the 2nd half, out rebounding the bigger NAIT team 36-34 for the game. Unfortunately, the Wolves had trouble scoring the ball which allowed NAIT to stretch their lead to 24. Kaitlyn Verduzco was named the Wolves Player of the game, with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Head Coach Jared Cheverie commented that the “girls worked extremely hard in the areas that we knew would be keys for us, namely our team defense and keeping NAIT off the glass. This allowed us to stay in the game and to keep fighting for 40 minutes”. Other notable performances came from rookie guards Sydney Andres with 10 points and 8 rebounds and, Latisha Chiwele with 10 rebounds.
Saturday’s game was much of the same for the Wolves. Coach Cheverie commenting that “with back to back games against such a strong opponent such as NAIT, ranked 7th nationally, is a tough thing to do but these girls kept fighting the good fight, despite fatigue, playing a very gritty second half defensively. Specifically, in the 3rd quarter when we held NAIT to only 7 points “. With 11 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist, Wolves player of the game was Latisha Chiwele, with other notable performances by veteran guard, Jill Cole (11 points and 3 rebounds) and rookie post Kassandra Little (7 points and 9 rebounds).
The Wolves will travel to Camrose to take on the host Augustana Vikings on February 3 and 4. Coach Cheverie is preparing for a solid rematch saying that “we will work hard to continue the progress made as we get back to practice and training this week as we prepare for Augustana, who we played tough in the first semester, losing by only 2 and 6 points respectively”.
The Wolves hit the road to take on the Augustana Vikings, Friday February 3rd at 6:00pm and Saturday February 4th at 1:00pm. All games can be watched live on acactv.ca
