When she transferred from GPRC to the U of A, McCormack says she fully intended on returning to her roots and establishing a career in the Peace Country. Her U of A internship program helped make that possible; two of McCormack’s field placements were in the former Peace Country Health Region – now Alberta Health Services (AHS) – with one of those leading to a permanent role. Since then, her career with the health region has progressed rapidly.
She began her career in 2007 as a dietician at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie, then moved into a management role in 2008. In 2012, she was selected to take a provincial position as Process Improvement Specialist for the Business Performance portfolio at AHS, focusing on supporting the growth of the process improvement culture within Nutrition and Food Services. McCormack’s role took her around the province, to hospitals in large centres like Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer, as well as many smaller rural hospitals.
Ironically, McCormack’s newest role will from time to time take her back to the halls of GPRC where she first began her studies. She is now AHS’s Clinical Liaison for the new $621.4 million regional hospital and cancer centre in Grande Prairie. In her new role, McCormack will be a link, communicating the vision and needs of patients and staff in over 25 departments to the project’s design team – from concept through to operational commissioning/opening. She will also be a liaison with external stakeholders, including GPRC. The new facility is currently under construction directly across the road from the College and will include approximately 4,000 square metres for GPRC’s nursing and medical careers programs.
“It’s a privilege to be part of a project that will provide our region with the infrastructure to enhance healthcare in the north. This facility will be a part of our community for many years,” says McCormack.
“My studies at GPRC gave me flexibility to choose a degree that led to a variety of roles in healthcare. For future GPRC students, it’s exciting to think that the possibility for studies and careers in healthcare will be even greater.”
