NWP Instructor Raoudha Kallel
Growing up in the francophone country of Tunisia, Dr. Raoudha Kallel was immersed in the French language and culture. As a child, she had always admired the teachers she had in school and decided from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher too. Teaching French was a natural choice for Dr. Kallel as her childhood exposure to the French language led to her lifelong passion of sharing the vibrant French culture.
“People would ask me as a child what I wanted to be, and I would say ‘a teacher’. I was always impressed by, and loved my teachers I had in school,” said Dr. Kallel.
After graduating high school, Dr. Kallel went on to complete a Bachelor of French and Linguistics at Laval University in Quebec. From there, she moved to Nova Scotia, where she completed her Masters and PhD, and began teaching French courses at Dalhousie University and St. Mary’s University in Halifax. Dr. Kallel also taught at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia for two years.
“I remember saying to my PhD professors that I was nervous to teach my first class. They kept telling me that I would love it,” she said. “I came into the class and the students were so lovely and that’s when I fell in love with teaching. I also love people and of course the French language and culture. Those three things together made me love it even more.”
For 13 years now, Dr. Kallel has been teaching students at Northwestern Polytechnic to speak, read, write, and listen to the language she loves. Every semester she looks forward to meeting new students as well as reconnecting with those who have taken more than one course under her instruction.
“I love teaching here. I love the class sizes. I love the interaction with the students,” Dr. Kallel said. “"I feel that Northwestern Polytechnic provides supports to instructors and students to follow through with our goals."
With her passion and excitement for teaching the French language and culture, Dr. Kallel hopes to inspire students to discover something new through someone else’s eyes.
“I will continue to teach French for my whole life. I love it,” said Dr. Kallel. “It doesn’t feel like work. When we are passionate about what we do, we never work a day.”
