The NAIT Ooks took on the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves in the third-fourth play-in game on Tuesday night at the Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion. Both teams were battling for a chance to compete in the ACAC Championship this weekend in Lethbridge.
Both teams came out racing to start the game. One team's season will end tonight, so everyone was ready to leave it all on the field, and they did. The first half of the game was a brutal back-and-forth battle, and neither team was willing to give it up. Both goalkeepers were sharp as they tried to give their team the upper hand.
It was 0-0 at the half.
It was a fast start to the second half. The Ooks started to pull ahead offensively, they kept hammering shots to the Wolves' net, but their keeper, Kasya Miller, was standing on her head and making all the saves to keep her team in the game. The Wolves weren't getting as many offensive opportunities as the Ooks, but their defence was strong.
The Wolves broke through first, scoring in the 63rd minute by Medea Chiba. The Wolves held the momentum for a few minutes, but the Ooks weren't ready to back down. Alana Mawhinney broke through in the 78th minute, tying the game.
It was a close battle as the game drew to a close, but Toni Burse for the NAIT Ooks capitalized on a beautiful chance at the 83rd-minute mark, and that was it for the game. The Ooks won 2-1 and are on their way to the ACAC Championship in Lethbridge this weekend.
