Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Wolves athlete and fourth year Bachelor of Education student Jess Winterford, along with her teammates and peers, has a new dedicated space at the college designed to take her training to the next level of competition.
GPRC recently renovated 1,700 square feet of College space to meet the demands of the College’s Sport, Fitness and Wellness program, resulting in the opening of GPRC’s new High Performance Training Centre.
“We are so pleased to have this new facility with the intention to help our student athletes’ development and training in their sport,” said Ron Thomson, Director of GPRC Sport, Fitness and Wellness. “We are still in our initial operations stage, but we’re excited to be making progress to better service our Wolves Athletics, academic programs and our Alberta Sport Development Centre NorthWest (ASDCNW) programs.”
Extensive upgrades and renovations to the Centre were completed over the summer of 2017 with funding from the College and community donors. The $150,000 investment in the College’s athletic facilities included removal of old equipment and flooring, installation of drop-resistant flooring and repainting of the walls. The Centre opened its doors October 10 to the Wolves athletes, who got to explore the Centre and learn about the equipment installed, how to use it and what the benefits are.
“This is huge for my training as an athlete,” said Winterford, who plays as a midfielder for the Wolves Women’s Soccer team. “It’s awesome that GPRC has created this space for us to train and improve our skills to better ourselves as a player and as a team. I can’t wait to get in here and start using all the new equipment.”
The new training facility is equipped with Hammer Strength equipment, one of the highest quality brands for high performance training by athletes at all levels of sport. The new facility houses equipment such as Olympic lifting stations, squat racks, power-lifting stations and other strength conditioning aids.
“Our intent is to take some time and continue to learn about the facility with our Wolves Athletes,” said Thomson. “The long-term plan is to grow this into a Regional High Performance Training Centre that will meet the needs of the emerging athletes and high performance athletes in our region.”
