While the bulk of learning is accomplished during hands-on work experience under the guidance of a professional mentor and sponsor, set 6-12 week periods of classroom instruction each year provide the necessary theoretical knowledge to round out your skilled trade competency.Registration can be completed online through your MyTradesecrets account, in-person at the Fairview or Grande Prairie Campus or by emailing us a completed registration form. School of Skilled Trades Programs That Work. We currently offer multiple hands-on training avenues for detail-oriented individuals who are eager to learn and have a strong work ethic. Explore Trades & Apprenticeships School of Skilled Trades What to Expect Typically, apprentices train for four years and then write provincial examinations set by industry and the Government of Alberta. Upon successful program completion, you will be certified by the Province as a qualified tradesperson or journeyperson. At this time, you may also write interprovincial exams to obtain Red Seal status. Getting StartedTo become an apprentice, you must be at least 16 years old and meet the minimum educational requirements for your trade. Apply online for Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Programs. AIT Programs & Services Please contact your nearest Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office for a list of training offices at 1-800-248-4823. How do I register for NWP apprenticeship classes? Can I register for more than one apprenticeship class at a time (back-to-back schooling)? Yes. You can register for your next period/year five days after your class has started. For example, if you are registered in January’s intake and start class on Monday, you would be eligible to register in your next period/year on Friday morning. Non-sponsored apprentices may not be eligible for back-to-back schooling. Please contact @email or call 1-888-822-2250 with your full name and apprenticeship number so we can look into your eligibility. Alternatively, you can contact the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office at 1-800-248-4823. How do I get results or a transcript from my apprenticeship? Transcripts can be requested online through your MyTradesecrets account. Course marks can also be viewed through your MyTradesecrets account. Contact AIT with questions or concerns at 1-800-248-4823. Access MyTradesecrets Account What happens when NWP classes are are full? Once a class is full, students are placed on a waitlist. If an apprentice withdraws from a course, waitlisted applicants will be notified via email in the order they were waitlisted. If you are on the waitlist, please ensure that your contact information is up to date on your MyTradesecrets account so that NWP knows the best method for contacting you. If you receive an email notifying you of an opening, there is a response deadline to accept the seat. When are my tuition/registration fees due? Full tuition payment is due at the time of registration. You can make online payments through your MyTradesecrets account, by phoning NWP at 1-888-822-2250 with your credit card information, or by submitting a completed form to apprenticeship@NWpolytech.ca. Please note that payment can not be taken over the phone until a completed enrolment form is received. Payment Options Can my company be invoiced? If you would like your company to be invoiced for your tuition/registration fees, please complete the Apprenticeship Confirmation of Sponsorship. The fully completed Apprenticeship Confirmation of Sponsorship Form must accompany your registration form. Please note that sponsored students are not able to register for their apprenticeship via the MyTradesecrets online registration system. Confirmation of Sponsorship Form Sponsorship Guidelines Apprenticeship Registration Form Are there penalties for cancelling an apprenticeship class at NWP? Tuition and fee refunds for apprenticeship students are made in accordance with the Academic Schedule Policy. If apprentices withdraw from training by the end of the business day prior to the first day of classes, 100% of apprenticeship tuition, program fees, MNIFs, and Students' Association fees paid for the class are refundable. The tuition deposit is forfeited if applicable. If apprentices withdraw from training on or after the first day of training, they are not eligible for a refund of apprenticeship tuition, material and service fees, program fees, MNIFs, or Students' Association fees. Will I automatically receive a refund if I cancel? Refunds, less the $100.00 administrative fee, must be requested in writing to @email as they are not automatically issued. Can I change my registration to a different date? Yes, you can change to another date within the academic year without penalty. To make changes, email @email. Be sure to include your full name, apprenticeship number, the class you are currently registered in and the class you would like to be moved to. Note: If there is no space available, you will be placed on the waitlist. The cancellation deadlines mentioned above in "Are there penalties for cancelling an apprenticeship class at NWP?" apply here as well. How can I contact the Apprenticeship Board? Inquiries regarding Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) should be directed to the AIT office nearest you. For a listing of offices, use the link below or call 1-800-248-4823. Training Locations When will I receive my notice of acceptance? Confirmation of acceptance into an NWP class will be sent to you via email. You should receive this shortly after you have registered. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please make sure your MyTradesecrets profile information is correct. If changes are required after you have registered for class, please contact Student Services to update your information. How do I apply for the Canada Apprentice Loan (CAL)? The Government of Canada offers Canada Apprentice Loan (CAL) funding to apprentices registered in a Red Seal trade apprenticeship program who are currently enrolled in technical training. CAL is intended to help apprentices cover the costs of tuition, tools, and equipment. It helps with living expenses and covers forgone wages. For more information, please contact Financial Aid. Are there any other grants that can help? The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1000 per year/level up to a maximum of $2000. The AIG is available to registered apprentices in designated Red Seal trades. The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a taxable cash grant of $2000. This grant helps registered apprentices who have completed their training become certified journeypersons in designated Red Seal trades. Use the link below for more information on these grants. Apprenticeship Grants How do I access my T2202 for income tax purposes? Northwestern Polytechnic issues T2202 forms for the previous tax year near the end of February. These tax forms can be found in your myNWP Account. If you have not created a myNWP account, one will be created on your behalf when the tax forms are ready. The password will be emailed to you. These accounts normally have the passwords set to your birth date in the format of yyyyMmmdd (e.g., 1992Apr01). The security question is NOT set up when the account is created. You should be prompted to change the password and to set up the security question on your initial login. If not, you can change your password and/or set up the question by visiting the My Profile tab, clicking the Account Information link, and then selecting either the myNWP Password or the Security Question menu items on the left. To find your tax form, go to the My Finances tab and click the T2202/T4A Tax Forms link. Tax forms are listed for each year you are eligible. If your SIN is not showing, please update that information and click the Save button. Access myNWP How do I set up a myNWP account? In order to set up a myNWP account, you need your NWP Student ID. You can create your myNWP account by first going to the Self-Service home page. Below the login button click Request Account. This will prompt you for your ID, legal First and Last Names, and date of birth, which must be entered in the format shown beside the field. Once the information is successfully entered, your account will be created, and the password will be sent to the email address that we have on file. You can then return to the Self-Service home page and enter your username (NWP ID) and password. You should then be prompted for a new password, which must fulfill the noted password requirements. You will also be asked to set up a security question that can be used to reset the password or retrieve your username/ID if you forget one or both in the future. Employment Insurance is available for eligible apprentices. The 16-digit reference code will be included in your confirmation email once you have registered for class. This fee is due and payable under the same terms and conditions as tuition fees.
