In this workshop-style course, learners will examine the rights and responsibilities of the worker as well as the employer in relation to current legislation (including Workers' Compensation, Employment Standards Code and Regulations). One focus will be to gain the attitudes, knowledge and skills related to workplace health and safety. Upon successful completion of agency exams, students will receive certificates from the Job Safety Skills Society. In addition, students will develop a resume specifically geared to obtaining part-time work while they are continuing their education.

This course focuses on principles of effective business communications, both written and spoken, including mechanics, style, tone, organization and APA style referencing. Specific topics include composing business letters, memoranda and emails; writing formal reports; principles of graphic design; and conducting effective business meetings.

This course emphasizes a range of mathematical calculations used in business. Students will be introduced to simple interest, compound interest, annuities, amortization and sinking funds. Practical applications will be emphasized in the course.

This course is a practical introduction to software applications commonly used in business. Students will develop a working knowledge of an operating system and various software applications which supports coursework, as well as prepares students for the business environment.

The focus of this introductory course will explore the relationship between human behaviour and organizational effectiveness. Contemporary management trends will be examined. Specific topics include perception, personality, motivation, group behavior, teamwork, organization culture, and change.

The nature of microeconomic systems are examined in relation to the function of markets, market failure and consumer utility, the costs of production, pricing under competitive and monopolistic conditions, markets for the factors of production and selected topics in analysis and policy. Current economic problems will be discussed throughout the course.

The objectives of financial management and financial decision making are explored in this course. The approach is practical in nature with an emphasis on cash flow analysis, working capital management, and financial planning.

This course covers the basic principles of investment and taxation. The course explores the structure of personal taxation including the calculations of income deductions and credits. The fundamental investment concept of risk and return, and different types of investment products available in the market place are topics included in this course.

This is an introduction to the use of random variables, descriptive statistics, probability, the binomial and normal probability distributions, estimation, small and large sample theory, analysis of variance, tests of hypotheses, regression analysis, forecasting, time series and linear programming is provided. Practical applications are emphasized in the course.

This course provides a practical approach to project management. It explores terminology, technique, method, communication, and skill of effective and efficient actions. Emphasis to define the scope, plan the project, and design execution contribute to practical learning. An ongoing term project will apply the principles and knowledge integral to the successful administration of a project. Students navigate complexity, risk, challenges, and disruption to manage resources and time constraints to reach project milestones.

This course provides an overview of the human resource function in contemporary business. Specifically, the topics covered include: the legal aspects of HR, HR planning, job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and health and safety.

The nature of macroeconomic systems are examined in relation to markets, national income analysis, aggregate demand and supply, the functions of money, commercial and central banking, monetary and fiscal policy, exchange rates, the balance of payments, and selected topics in analysis and policy. Current economy-wide issues will be discussed throughout the course.

The communication techniques and relationship skills, as well as the psychological characteristics that influence client behaviour are topics in this course. The course covers financial statement preparation and analysis from a personal perspective, and the cash and debt management that flows from these statements. This course reviews time value of money and economic concepts applicable to the principle subject areas of financial planning.

This course offers an overview of the customers and products involved in the financial marketplace. It introduces the student to client objectives and types. Securities, financial markets, and investment portfolios are also examined. A review of mutual funds is done focusing on the different types of funds, their fees and services, and how to select a fund.

The focus of this course is the establishment of small business enterprises and issues related to managing them. Managerial and strategic problems during the early years of business formation and growth are examined with emphasis on the entrepreneurial process, opportunity recognition, business planning, mobilizing resources and organization creation.

This course is the first in a series of three cooperative work experience placements, offering students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a paid, minimum 400-hour work term in the business world. Students will gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, focusing on foundational business skills. Participation in the co-op program is optional but requires successful completion of all three work terms to fulfill the co-op pathway. The work term is monitored and evaluated by the employer.

This is an introductory course providing insight into children's development from conception to age two. This course provides an overview of principles, domains, and major theories of children’s development and influences on development during the prenatal and neonatal stages, as well as during infancy and toddlerhood. The relationship between theory and practice in infant-toddler programs is also examined.

This course offers a broad overview of the field of early learning and child care. Students will investigate historical factors that have shaped early childhood theory and practice and will examine a variety of program models and their goals. The roles and responsibilities of the early childhood educator and determinants of quality early childhood programs are also discussed. This course also introduces students to some of the agencies and resources that support the professional growth of early childhood educators.

This course provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide for the basic health, safety and nutritional needs of young children. Requirements for healthy and safe early childhood environments will be identified. The nutritional needs of young children will be established and appropriate menu planning strategies explored. Developmentally appropriate practices and experiences for establishing healthful attitudes in young children are also included.

This course introduces students to the field of early learning and child care. Students will observe and interact with children in a variety of early childhood community programs and will contrast the similarities and differences in environments, program practices and services provided for young children and their families. Students will attend weekly seminars throughout the practicum weeks.

A practical course which explores children's art, literature and music from a child-centred perspective.

This course focuses on the physical, cognitive, creative, and psychosocial development of children from 2-6 years of age and factors that contributes to individuals variations in development. Theoretical perspectives and research findings that contribute to our understanding of child development will be examined, as well as their implications for practice in Early Learning and Child Care settings.

This is normally an eight week practicum in an early childhood setting. Students will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice in their work with young children. Students will spend time in the Children's Centre demonstration program as a component of this practicum and will attend weekly seminars throughout the practicum weeks.

This course provides an introduction to the central role of play in early learning and child care settings, with an emphasis on developmentally appropriate, culturally-sensitive practices. This course focuses on a number of topics including the nature, value, and types of play, as well as important theories and issues regarding play. Students will also learn about the role of the practitioner in play, including the use of appropriate observation and documentation to understand and support children's development through play.

The adults’ role in supporting young children’s learning and development with an emphasis on a child-centered, play-based approach to curriculum planning will be examined in this course. Appropriate child centered routines, schedules, transitions and group times will also be discussed. The focus is on children from birth to age 6.

This course is designed to help students understand children’s behaviour and what it means to use a positive guidance approach in supporting children’s social, emotional, and moral development. Environmental and developmental factors which influence behaviour are examined, as are the principles of the guidance approach and ways in which these principles can be applied in early learning and child care settings.

This course focuses on how the child's physical environment supports social, cognitive, physical and emotional development through the early childhood years. Students will analyze specific components of high quality environments for young children and will learn important principles that can be applied to the design of indoor and outdoor play environments for preschool children.

Students examine the role of the administrator in Early Learning and Child Care Programs, including effective staff supervision, models and techniques for evaluating and motivating staff. Students will learn about funding available from all levels of government as well as service organizations in the private sector. The budgeting process advertising and marketing strategies will be explored.

This is normally a six week practicum in a community early childhood setting such as a child care center, nursery school, kindergarten, family day home or a special placement such as a play program for children in a woman's shelter or an early intervention program. Students will attend weekly seminars throughout the practicum weeks.

This course introduces students to science, mathematical and social knowledge. The course emphasis is on integrating social, physical and logical mathematical experiences in the preschool child's environment. Students learn to use developmentally appropriate curriculum to facilitate the young child's construction of knowledge in these areas.

A practical course which examines the characteristics of quality programs for infants and toddlers and explores programming techniques which respond to the individual and group needs of children up to 36 months of age. The focus of this course is on developing an awareness of the critical importance of care and interaction in the lives of infants and toddlers.

This course further explores the interrelationship between self concept, self awareness and communicative processes. Strategies for dealing with stress are examined.

This course focuses on the role of the early childhood practitioner in providing family-centered care and education for children from birth to age 8. The skills, knowledge, and attributes required to develop and sustain positive, collaborative, and empowering relationships with families are examined.

This course examines the developmental characteristics of children ages 6 through 12 years and the components of high quality out of school care programs. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to ensure that the environment, experiences and interactions meet the needs of school age children.

Students will attend weekly seminars throughout the semester in preparation and support of this practicum. Students will design and operate an eight week program for preschool children. With the support of program instructors, students will be responsible for all aspects of a program for young children and their families.

This course builds on CD1370 (Guiding Children's Behaviour I) and provides an in depth exploration of factors that influence children's behaviour, as well as guidance strategies practitioners can use to build children's social competence. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the adult-child relationship as the foundation for children's social, emotional and moral development. This course also offers strategies for coping with challenging behaviours, such as bullying and for working collaboratively with parents to resolve behavioural issues.

This course provides an in-depth study of the structures of the human body and their interrelationships using a systems approach. The correlations between structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) are noted. Major topics include body organization, the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, endocrine, urinary and reproductive systems, the general and special senses, and human development. This course is designed to prepare students in medical fields of study for advanced courses in their respective disciplines.

The student will apply new theory, incorporate practical skills, history, assessment, clinical presentation, and diagnostic findings of the ill or injured patient to determine a provisional diagnosis utilizing differential diagnoses and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Students will integrate all knowledge and skills to manage calls for the delivery of safe patient care and promote optimal outcomes. Integration of all these components is critical to address the multiple medical and traumatic conditions encountered in the field. The student will demonstrate proficiency in the application of all competencies in a Skills, Scenario, and Simulation environment.

This course will introduce you to the physical, social, mental, occupational, emotional, environmental, and spiritual dimensions of personal health and wellness. These dimensions are described within the context of the Canadian Health Care System and your own individual community. Topics include primary health care, nutrition, exercise, stress management, weight management, eating disorders, common health issues and their prevention. You will be expected to integrate knowledge of the seven dimensions of health and apply this knowledge to a self-analysis of your own health and physical fitness. Finally, you will incorporate change management theory to develop, implement and evaluate a personal wellness plan. The intent of this course is to promote a healthy lifestyle. By examining determinants of health, the current care system, the seven dimensions of health and applying these concepts to your own lifestyle, you will be better equipped to function as role models and act as change agents for health promotion in your community.

Obstetrics, neonates, pediatrics and geriatrics are the major focus of this course with competency attainment at the level of proficiency during the mandatory on-site labs.

This course provides a study of the overall function of the human body. Major topics include fundamental chemistry, homeostasis, cytology and cell physiology, cell signaling and communication, and muscle, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, endocrine, urinary and reproductive physiology, as well as fundamental genetics as it applies to human physiology. This course is designed to prepare students in medical fields of study for advanced courses in their respective fields, as well as other university transfer students.

This course focuses on the study of homeostasis and how it is altered by physical, biochemical, microbial or genetic factors, providing an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of human body function, pathophysiology (disordered physiology) and disease processes. The course summarizes the normal function of each organ system and then presents a number of major diseases of each system, showing how symptoms and signs of selected diseases are produced by pathophysiology. This course is designed to prepare students, particularly those in medical fields, for advanced coursework.

This course focuses on the theoretical knowledge required for safe medication administration. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology will be integrated into the curriculum as mechanisms of action, therapeutic effects, adverse effects, and drug interactions are explored. The study of common drug classifications along with selected frequently used medications in each classification will be included. Legislation is reviewed with regards to over the counter and prescription drugs, and political, social, economic, and ethical factors will be discussed. Applicable professional practice interventions are examined with supporting rationale.

Obtaining an accurate health history and performing a systematic physical examination is essential in paramedicine practice. Paramedics must be able to accurately describe and document assessment findings. This course will support students in developing efficient, thorough, and systematic histories and physical examinations of patients who are in different states of physical, mental, and emotional health.

Paramedics work as team members in highly stressful environments with other first responders and health care professionals. As a team member, paramedics require strong professional, communication, collaboration, mentorship, self-reflective, and leadership abilities. Providing safe and competent care to patients and their families requires understanding the importance of research and evidence-based practice. Paramedic practice is guided by a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, legislative/regulatory requirements, and the ability to maintain physical/mental health and injury prevention. Paramedic practice also requires the practitioner to recognize the value of continuous quality improvement, risk management, and continuing competency processes. This course will discuss these concepts and provide learners with the resources and support to practice as a professional paramedic.

This course includes a study of the five basic forms in literature: essays, short stories, novels, drama and poetry. Both oral presentations and written compositions are required - mainly essays and one major research paper.

This course is designed to provide students in Education who expect to work with children (ages 0-12) with a working knowledge of important concepts and issues in Educational Psychology. Students will gain an understanding of how children from diverse backgrounds develop and learn and how teachers provide appropriate learning opportunities to support academic, cognitive and moral development, culture and diversity, and psychological development.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with human development across the school years.

This unique, optional course provides students the opportunity to put classroom learning into practice in a 200-hour work experience, where work experiences provide students with experience in a workplace setting related to the student's field of study and/or career goals. This course involves 30 hours of employment training activities. Students are responsible for securing an approved work-experience placement; the work experience is monitored and evaluated by the employer.

A synoptic view of the Canadian legal system, with emphasis on underlying considerations of social policy. While considering the nature, sources, philosophy, and policy objectives of the law, selected topics from the fields of tort and contract will be analyzed.

The course builds upon the personal leadership foundations of NS2005. It explores the organization of healthcare systems, concepts of healthcare management and care delivery models. The course provides an overview of healthcare policy and the roles of the nurse in influencing health policy, and facilitating change within healthcare systems.

The course prepares learners with the knowledge and capabilities for working within complex interprofessional environments in health care. This modularized course covers the essential fundamentals of working in a professional office. Students will be introduced to the competencies and procedures required in a business environment. Upon completion, students should be able to display skills and decision-making abilities essential for functioning in the total office context.

This course provides an opportunity for the student to work in a supervised office environment and apply skills and knowledge learned in the program. A minimum of 135 hours of office practicum, over one semester, is required. Students will complete an orientation to office information systems prior to the practicum. Students will work full or part-time shifts in a professional office with an experienced office manager. The office manager will act as supervisor and the student will follow the supervisor's work rotation.

The role of an Educational Assistant involves assisting children who have delays in speech, language and communication. This course will provide students with specific techniques and intervention strategies to work with speech-language pathologists in supporting these children.

This course examines the teacher assistant's role in supporting children who are experiencing developmental delays in language, literacy and mathematics. The focus is on the use of developmentally appropriate/age appropriate instructional strategies and materials that are designed to improve performance and understanding in the areas of speech, reading, writing, and mathematical reasoning. This practicum consists of 6 weeks of fieldwork in a school setting and 15 hours of an integration seminar on campus. Practicum experience gives students the opportunity to integrate the skills and knowledge learned in their courses with practical experience in classroom environments. College instructors and school personnel will supervise and evaluate practicum students.

This course provides students with the competence required to support children in their use of technology. It provides opportunities for students to acquire basic knowledge of computer software, peripherals, and assistive technology.

This course is an introduction to the characteristics of school-age exceptional learners and their education. Emphasis will be placed on the Educational Assistant's role in supporting all student populations and their diverse needs. Specifically the course will discuss the history of education for students who have diverse needs and/or come from a variety of cultural/religious backgrounds. Strategies to promote inclusion and the right to an education that meets individual needs will be discussed from the educational assistant perspective.

This course is an introduction to the various conditions that exist within a neurodiverse population within a school setting. This will include autism spectrum disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, emotional and behavioral disorders, communication disorders, auditory and visual impairments, multiple and severe disabilities, physical disabilities, and giftedness. Students will learn about diagnosis, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and strategies used in school settings.

This course focuses on principles of effective professional and academic writing and communication, including mechanics, style, tone, organization, and referencing. Specific topics include professional correspondence and writing academic reports and research papers.

This course explores basic and therapeutic communication skills for the health professional. Communication skills required for the development of caring relationships and to overcome barriers will be discussed, as well as the skills needed for interprofessional practice, group and family communication. Health teaching in individual and group settings is an important component of this course.
