Kelsi McInnes, MA, MTA, is a certified music therapist, born and raised in the Peace Country, she believes in building her community. Kelsi has been working as a music therapist since 2009 and providing services in the Grande Prairie region since 2013. She holds a master's degree in Creative Arts Therapies - Music Therapy from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, with a bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from Capilano University in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Her education has encompassed counselling skills, studies of chronic and various medical conditions, therapeutic interventions, musical training and improvisation, assessment, research, advanced clinical skills, supervision and teaching.
In 2018 she formed the band, McKINDRED, which she is the frontwoman and songwriter for the group. The band performs regularly in the Peace Region, most notably at the Bear Creek Folk Festival in 2021 and 2022 and in the same year as part of the CCMA’s Off-Country Music Festival in Calgary. McKINDRED released their debut album “Ascend” in 2021 and their music has been featured on CBC Radio’s the Key of A, as well as Edmonton’s 89.3, the Raven, and play on 91.7 Erin Radio and Peace RM 94.5/104.1, CKUA and 102.3 NOW! Radio in Edmonton.
Using her experience and skillset that she has developed throughout her career, Kelsi continues to work to bring her community together through music, whether it is through music therapy sessions, presenting on the benefits of music and wellness, being the co-director of a week-long music camp or playing at or managing live music events. Kelsi understands the benefits of music on a deeply therapeutic level and has a drive to share this knowledge with others.
In her presentation, The Music Connection, Kelsi explores music therapy and why humans have such an innate connection to music. Further, she shares how we can use this effectively for our own personal and professional wellbeing.
